Birth Overview

Kyle was originally due May 10, 2005, but that day came and
went with nothing happening.  However, on May 11th
Yuliya's water broke, but not in a splash as one might
expect.  We called the Dr., who said to head to the hospital.
We got checked in around 3:30 PM.  The Nurse confirmed
her water had broken and said we weren't leaving there
without Kyle.  They hooked Yuliya up to a monitor which
measured Kyle's heart rate and Yuliya's contractions.  The
Grandparents showed up and Paul stopped in to see how
things were going.  Her contractions started small and were
far apart.  As the evening wore on they got stronger and
closer together.  Around midnight the Nurse said they would
start inducing labor as Yuliya wasn't dilated enough.  By 1
A.M., the contractions were strong and frequent enough that
Yuliya requested her epidural.  The Dr. and Nurses came in
and requested that I go sit in the waiting room with the
Grandparents, while they inserted the epidural.  I was sitting
in the waiting room for about 20 minutes when a Nurse,
who I hadn't seen before, came rushing in asking me to
come with her.  On the way to Yuliya's room she explained to
me the Kyle's heart rate had dropped from 140 to 30 and
that they were going to do an emergency C-Section.  They
suspected, correctly, that Kyle had gotten his cord wrapped
around his neck which was choking him.  When I got to the
room there  were 5 Nurses and a Dr. frantically  working on
getting Yuliya prepped for surgery.   I could see and feel the
seriousness.  They quickly rolled Yuliya down to the
Operating Room and a Nurse threw me a pair of scrubs.
When I was finally able to get into the OR I could hear Kyle
crying and knew everything was OK.  They had already cut
the cord and were cleaning him up so I sat next to Yuliya
describing how Kyle looked  and providing encouragement.
Of course I had to check out what was left of the surgical
procedure, its always better to see it in real life than on TV.  I
was asked to leave with Kyle and his Nurse so we could do
his measurements.  Luckily for the Grandparents we had to
go by the waiting room.  As we passed by they pounced on
us like the paparazzi, cameras aimed and flashes flashing.
While doing the measurements they rolled Yuliya back to
her room for recovery.  The Dr. and Nurses said everything
was fine and we would be staying for a few days.  We finally
checked out May 15th, around 1 PM.  I was truly amazed at
how quick the C-Section went and was damn proud to hold
Kyle for the first time.  So our adventure in parenthood
begins!!!!
